VICTORIA - The CRD has voted in favour of moving ahead with a plan to build a sewage treatment plant on McLaughlin Point in Esquimalt.

In a vote of ten to three, the CRD Board passed a motion to present the Provincial and Federal Governments with a plan to build a centralized waste treatment facility. To qualify for federal funding, the proposal needs to be tabled by the end of June. The new plant needs to be built by 2016.

All of the sewage from Greater Victoria will be pumped to the McLaughlin Point facility. Liquid waste will be processed onsite, and solid waste will be pumped to another location for processing.

The cost of the project is estimated at 782 million dollars.

Government approval is expected this fall.
